Heritage: Exploring Peru's Ancient
Surf

Peru is a land of ancient mystery shrouded
in fog, arid coastal desserts and cold water holding some
of the worlds best surf. Chicama best defines the type
of surf breaks found throughout Peru. This film is not
so much about the super long left points or hollow rights
but more of the surfing heritage which
has spread throughout the world from this special
place. We'll explore an ancient people,
the Mochica, which predate the Incas by two civilizations.
Their traditional surf craft which was used for fishing
by the everyday people and possibly as a leisure activity
by the royal class is still in use today in towns such
as Huanchaco. We documented a unique
event which combined old and new in a surf contest where
the contestants proved who is the best surfer by demonstrating
their skills on both modern surfboards and ancient reed
surf craft - The Caballito de Totora.
Artifacts dating back some 3,000-4,000 BC depict
wave riding, possibly claiming Peru as the oldest surf
culture on Planet Earth, predating the Polynesians.
Great surfing is also to be expected
to tell the story and please the eye with stylish
surfing both modern and ancient.
Interviews about how our tribes
surfing heritage can be traced back to Peru and
questions asked if the possible oldest surfing culture
stems from this incredible land is provided by people
with deep surfing heritage such as surfing legend, 1965
World Surf Champ and current big wave surfer, Felipe
Pomar, Surf Historian, Fortunato Quesada,
Surf Historian/Activisit, Glenn Hening,
the National Geographic's Most Adventurous Person, Pacific
Mariner & Grandson to Thor Heyerdahl, Olav
Heyerdahl, Second in Command of Peru's Navy John
Rodriguez Asti, along with three of the country's
top surfers Gabriel Aramburu, Gonzalo Velasco
and Claudia Balducci.
